My story
I was born in Borlänge, Sweden 🇸🇪 in December 1983. I suppose I did what most kids do when growing up; eating yellow snow, building tree houses and such.
I got interested in computers early on because of my older brother. At the age of seven I wrote my first game in AMOS for the Amiga 500. It was a (very buggy) Boulder Dash 💎 clone. This is where I really got hooked and I’ve been programming every since.
I chose the natural sciences' orientation for high school. Chemistry ⚗️ and math were my favourite subjects. I wasn’t particularly talented in any of them, but I enjoyed them regardless.
After finishing high school I moved to Uppsala, Sweden to study Biology 🦓. I loved certain parts of it, especially the genetics 🧬. However, it slowly crept up on me, that the thing I was really passionate about was computer science.
I abandoned my Biology studies and moved back to Borlänge and started studying computer science. The plan was to get a degree in it, but halfway through I got a job offer from KnowIT, an IT consultancy firm.
I worked at KnowIT for about five years, and I really enjoyed it. This is where I got exposed to the Microsoft tech stack. I worked mostly with C# and VB.NET building and maintaining sites and applications for our customers.
I moved to Malta 🇲🇹 in 2009, after having gotten a job at Uniblue Systems 💙. Uniblue was a system utilities company which no longer exists. This is where I first started using the Python 🐍 programming language.
I left Uniblue to try to develop and sell something on my own. A friend and I teamed up, and failed miserably together 💣. Let’s just say we were good at making products, just not that good at selling or marketing them.
Eventually we joined forces with some other ex-Unibluers, and suddenly I was one of the five co-founders of what came to be Hotjar 🔥.
We had a lot of fun and the company grew way more than we expected. In 2019 I got the way too fancy title of Principal Software Engineer 🤯. At that point we had grown to around 70 employees in total.
In early 2021 I felt it was time for me to leave Hotjar 👋. We had reached ~150 employees and I felt my “baby” had grown up. It was certainly an awesome adventure, but it was time for me to move on.
I’m currently experimenting with some ambitious new ideas under the Empathic Cat Software 🐈 umbrella. This is just a placeholder page for now, but expect interesting things to appear in the near future.
